A Report Text

A.    What is Report Text?
The first point we should be aware of is the General Definition and the Classification of each subject that we intend to write in the form of reported text.

B.     The purpose of a text/social function:
To report something, just like the way it is. The subject includes natural things, environment, social matters, or human matters. Description of a general classification.

C.    Generic structure:
  • General classification which includes the report’s subject, information, and its classification.
  • Description of the subject.
  • Use of present tense

Compare the following examples of a report text and a descriptive text.
       Look at the examples.
       Report text (more general)
Music

Music is sound out into pleasing or interesting patterns. People use music for a part of ceremonies, such religious services, parades, and weddings. People also use music to show their feelings and ideas.

       Descriptive text (more specific)
Music box

Music boxes are small instruments that play tunes by themselves. The music-making parts of a music box are a cylinder and a row of metal teeth of  different lengths. A spring or a set of wheels turns the cylinder.

In the first text, report text, the writer tells us about the music in general without telling us kind of music. It does not state  more specific music and we just know the topic in general. It just the information about music.
Different from the second text, descriptive text, the writer tells us more specific one that is about music box. In this text, the writer tells us the description of music box to more specific one. So, the reader can identify the topic as specific as possible.
Look again at the example of report text below.
