A Narrative Test


A.          What is a narrative?
          A narrative is a piece of writing that tells a story. It may be based on the truth (fact) or it may be made up (fiction).
Narratives usually contain at least these features:
  1. Title (the name of the story)
  2. Orientation (setting, time, main characters introduced)
  3. Problems/complication (some conflict involving the main character(s))
  4. Resolution (the solution to the problem)
Narratives contain imaginary characters. Sometimes they are animals that they have human characters.

B.     Purpose
Writers write narrative texts (stories) to entertain people with a true experience or an imaginary one. The characteristics of the text is marked by conflict and resolution.

C.    Text structure
          A narrative text mainly consists of three parts of generic structures: orientation, complications (problems) and resolution.
a.       The orientation presents the setting and introduces the characters in a story. It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced.
b.      The complication is about Where the problems in the story developed. The story continues  by presenting a problem or some problems.
c.       The resolution, the problems are resolved for better or for worse.

D.    Generic structure is indicated by:
  • Who, where, action verbs.
  • Linking words, specific characters
  • End of the story’s conflict
  • Coda: changes that occurred and the moral of the story.

E.     An example of a narrative text.
Read the following information carefully.



 
Cinderella

         Once upon a time there was a girl called Cinderella, she lived with her stepsisters and stepmother. They treated her badly. She had to do all the house work.
         One day an invitation to the ball came to the family. But, her stepsisters would not let her go. Cinderella was sad. The stepsisters went to the ball without her.
         Fortunately, the fairy godmother came and helped her to get to the ball. At the ball, Cinderella danced with the prince.teh prince fell in love with her and then married her. They lived happily ever after.
